I chose to go away with Projects Abroad because it is the largest (and probably best) organiser of overseas volunteering and the staff really does its best to match volunteers’ skills to the needs of the partner organisations abroad. Far away, in India, 18-year-old Piper Connelly composed an e-mail to explain how exactly she found herself in the village of Ullar - a place where a few hundred people live near rice and sugarcane fields while the mountainous Western Ghats stretch in the distance. It only took Connelly an instant to transmit her message back home to her native Tulsa, where she maintained a waitressing job at Elote before leaving her parents' home to volunteer for Projects Abroad.

A student has been held up as a shining example for using her gap year to undertake community work in an African village. Helen Peacock, of Guilden Sutton, near Chester, spent the past year working in a rural primary school in Ghana through a programme called Projects Abroad. The 22-year old said: “Ghana seemed one of the most interesting and diverse places to visit, accorded by its history, culture and geography."

October 2010Barrowford teenager volunteers in fight against malaria
A Barrowford teenager gave up the comforts of home to work with malaria sufferers in West Africa. Freddie Bailey, embarked on his month-long journey as a medical volunteer in Togo. The 18-year-old, who lives with his mum Jan in Highfield Crescent, said the trip had made him determined to pursue a career in medicine and help people in third world countries. The Clitheroe Grammar sixth form student worked as a trainee nurse during the trip organised by Projects Abroad.

Two leading volunteer organisations, Projects Abroad and Year Out Group, disagree over the Mayor’s taunting comments. Boris Johnson caused controversy earlier this week after mocking young people who take a ‘gap yah in Tanzani-ah’. The comments came at the launch of City Year London, a volunteering scheme to educate those at deprived schools in three areas of London: Islington, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

May 2010Girls on their bikes for Sri Lankan trip
Two teenagers will get on their bikes to fund their work with orphans in Sri Lanka. Esther Eldridge, aged 16, and Alice Hill, aged 15, will cycle 38 miles from Manchester to Liverpool on May 30 to pay for two weeks’ work experience in south Asia in July. The girls will complete the trek with Maria Hill, Alice’s mum. The pair need to raise £2,000 to go on the trip, organised by Projects Abroad – a company specialising in work placements for students.

Something as simple as a second-hand football shirt really can make all the difference to an impoverished child living on the streets in Africa. Worthing man David Williams will be spending at least one month with street children in Senegal – a country in West Africa where extremely poor people live in close proximity to others who are rich.

February 2010Bristol Student Fiji Flight
A Downend student is flying out to Fiji to help in a children's centre. Clare McKenzie, 21, who lives in Coronation Road, is in the second year of her Tourism Management degree at Bath Spa University and chose the placement as one of the modules. She will now spend a month working as a volunteer in the Nadi Centre as part of a placement organised with Projects Abroad.
February 2010On a Foreign Mission
Brian MCCarthy was bored of the usual holidays. Various TY projects had opened his eyes to both the diversity and injustices of the world, so when an opportunity to work as a volunteer in Ghana arose, he took it. Brian got a part-time job and saved the requisite €2,000, plus around €600 for flights.
