On your group’s first day, you will be assigned a supervisor who will be able to advise and support you during your placement. Your mornings will be spent in a city clinic working with pets, such as cats and dogs, but you will also come into contact with livestock such as goats and chickens. In the afternoon there will be opportunities to go out into the field to visit farms or even Accra Zoo.
Your work will include administering vaccinations, and observing and assisting in operations, laboratory work, post mortems and routine treatments. By shadowing local vets, you will learn how to handle different animals, diseases that have almost been eradicated in developed countries and will also have a better understanding of the problems that vets and farmers face.
Ghana is a colourful, exciting and popular place to spend some time on a volunteer project. Once the British colony known as the 'Gold Coast', it is renowned for the friendliness and warmth of its people. Ghana has great beaches, wild savannah and dense rainforests. This English-speaking country provides volunteers with a wonderful introduction to Africa; it is politically-stable, safe, affordable and rewarding to visit.
