Mexico Animal Care
- Who?Groups of 3 -10 students aged 18+
- When? Projects have flexible dates and run all year round
- Where? Guadalajara, Mexico.

Your group, along with a few key members of staff, will be responsible for the well-being of the animals and the running of a special centre for wild and domestic animals in Guadalajara. Your placement is based at a rescue centre similar to the charity-run animal care centres in Europe but it lacks general support and resources, meaning the need for skilled volunteers are great. The centre works in conjunction with Proteccion Civil - the local emergency service - who deliver injured, mistreated and abandoned animals to the centre, either for permanent residence and care or as part of a rehabilitation process before they are released back into the wild.
You will get involved in many practical tasks such as feeding the animals and cleaning and repairing enclosures as well as being involved in assisting the specialists in retraining the animals to live independently; helping them to improve skills they may have lost, or never fully developed, while in captivity. There is a huge range of animals at the centre, including falcons, eagles, toucans, parrots, owls, turtles, snakes, crocodiles, ocelots and raccoons. You will leave your placement having learnt a great deal about a variety of different species and about the rehabilitation process for these animals.
Mexico is a real meeting-place of cultures; a modern, industrialised and well-educated country that's full of history. American, Spanish and Indian influences all come together to make it a fascinating place that mixes developed and developing worlds. Your placement and host family are both situated in the large city of Guadalajara where Projects Abroad Mexico is based. Living in Mexico is an experience difficult to match.
