Volunteers at excavation site in Romania

By taking part in our Archaeology project in Romania, groups will gain hands-on experience and learn many relevant practical skills within the field of archaeology. Your group will work on excavation sites in Deva, Alba-Iulia, Bordusani-Popina, and Harsova and you will carry out fieldwork including helping with digs, surveying and cleaning and reconstructing pottery, tools or other artefacts that have been found there.

Alongside the practical work your group will write up documents and reports concerning the work you are doing and produce proposals for new sites in the area. These are then presented to potential national and international donors. You can also spend time in the History Museum in Cluj or Alba Iulia, helping with pottery reconstruction and research and also get involved with helping in the museum itself; translating documents and designing tourist information.

Romania is slightly smaller than the UK and occupies the heart of Eastern Europe. The outstanding scenery, biodiversity and paradoxes of a country that is in the process of economic and cultural change will mould the experiences of any trip to Romania. Archaeology volunteers are based in Deva, a city with 80,000 inhabitants, which is the capital city of the Hunedoara district and has an extensive and fascinating history. Depending on the location of the digs, your group will be accommodated in a guesthouse in Deva, or may camp, stay in hostels or with local families close to the site if the digs are not within commutable distance.
