Teaching IT in Sri Lanka
Teaching IT in Sri Lanka

Your group will be based in a small village on the coast near Wadduwa in the rural setting of Mawala, working in an IT centre set up by Projects Abroad. Children come from miles around to take classes on the course we have established there and your skills will be valuable in teaching computer programmes like Word and Excel. Many people in this part of Sri Lanka have never used a computer before and helping them become computer-literate is invaluable for their future education and job prospects.

You will teach a variety of computer skills ranging from the real basics, such as how to switch a computer on and off and explaining what a 'mouse' does, to explaining software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and how to use the Internet for research, educational games and communication. You will follow a set course and will benefit from the help of an English and Singhalese-speaking local who has done the course. Your knowledge of IT can also be put to good use by developing databases and assisting with any maintenance work. There will also be some informal English teaching available alongside giving IT lessons for any of your group that are interested.

Sri Lanka's population is multi-religious and multi-ethnic, and its cultural heritage is equally as rich and diverse. Sri Lanka is teeming with varied and exotic wildlife species and with national parks, wetlands, rainforest reserves and stunning beaches, her landscape couldn’t be more diverse. The food in Sri Lanka is a real pleasure and wherever you go you will find the Sri Lankan people are always extremely friendly.
