Sponsored swim starts Sophie’s India mission

March 2012

ROTHESAY Academy pupil Sophie Duncan’s bid to raise the money she needs to spend two weeks as a charity worker in India this summer has started just swimmingly.

The first in a series of fund-raising events saw Sophie complete a two-mile sponsored swim at Rothesay Leisure Pool on Thursday evening in just 90 minutes.

Her efforts to raise £2000 to pay for her two-week placement with Projects Abroad have also received a boost in the form of the profits from Rothesay Academy’s Valentine’s disco, which was organised by Sophie and her fellow pupils, while there are plans for several other events between now and the summer holidays.

Sophie, who hopes to pursue a career in medicine when she leaves the Academy, hopes to work with Projects Abroad, one of the world’s leading organisers of volunteer overseas work placements, in India from July 8-23, working in hospitals during the day and learning about the culture and nature of the world’s most populous nation outside of working hours.
