Torekallgymnasiet are a vocational high school from the town of Sodertalje, Sweden. They wanted their students to gain practical experience outside of the classroom and put their acquired skills to the test whilst learning new ones.
Planning started in spring 2018 and came to its conclusion in January 2019 when they came across Projects Abroad, the leader said “we felt that your approach would be good for our professional students”.
It was finalised that five of the students would do building, painting and plumbing programs and two other students would focus their efforts on producing media content for the school website and social media platforms. From contacting Projects Abroad on January 13th 2019 – everything was in place for the trip to go ahead; it was finalised that they would travel to Jamaica to complete a community building project on the 17th March 2019 for 2 weeks.
What did they do?
The group’s efforts were focused on achieving two main objectives:
- To renovate the house of an elderly man
- To renovate and repair the Old England Primary School
The group were tasked with renovating the house of a 64 year old man Paul Powell, a resident of the Greenvale district in the community of Mile Gully. The project took place thirty five minutes from the Mandeville town centre. Mr. Powell lived in a one bedroom structure that was in deplorable condition. He didn’t have a bathroom facility. His roof was structurally unsafe and leaked whenever it rained, often causing him to fall ill.
The group were also tasked with renovating the Old England School located 20 minutes out of Mandeville in a farming community. Most of the students who attend the institution are from the community. The volunteers work involved completing painting work, renovation of a section of the roof and refitting the computer lab.
The end result!
It’s safe to say that the efforts of the students were fantastic and have made a direct and profound impact on the lives of those that needed it the most. Mr. Powell now has a structurally sound weatherproof house which boosts a spacious bedroom and a clean bathroom.
The students also contributed to the renovation project at the school which was a great success. A newly renovated IT Lab, roof repairs and both exterior and interior walls were product of the group’s efforts. Enhancing the learning environment for the students at the school will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the students and staff of the Old England School.
After the first week the group were rewarded for their hard work and commitment to the project with two well deserved trips to Negril Beach on the Saturday and YS Falls on the Sunday.
