Located in the only English speaking country in Central America, San Pedro offers a beautiful tropical destination full of incredibly hospitable people. Groups volunteering on a Care and Community project in Belize will prove invaluable to the staff and children at the kindergarten or school where they work. Regardless of whether you’re a group from school, some friends from university or a group of work colleagues looking for a fulfilling break, you will have a role to play and your contribution will be valued immensely.

Your group will work to provide educational support to disadvantaged local children in the town of San Pedro. Although there are kindergartens and schools in Belize that provide quality education for children, many families are not able to afford additional costs such as uniforms, books, and stationery supplies. Furthermore, there is high demand for placements, and teachers are often overburdened. Your group will help to assist staff in providing much needed care and attention for those children that attend the school or kindergarten.

Volunteering as a group, you will work in local kindergartens and primary schools that provide care and education to children from impoverished backgrounds. Your group will provide the children with vital one-on-one attention whilst helping the local staff to support the educational and early childhood development of these children.

Your group will work with children who need to develop literacy and numeracy skills and also spend time helping children who are struggling with homework. Other activities will involve organising arts & crafts, games and sports as well as other creative and physical activities. Your group will also aid staff with some of day-to-day practical tasks, such as washing the dishes and ensuring the children are ready for the day, which are essential to the running of these placements. This will give the individual members of your group a great chance to bond with the children and also the staff members. Most groups work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.

Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help to groups working on Care projects. This may include buying some paints or art materials for planned activities, for example. Suggestions from the volunteers in your group are welcomed and we are open to any ideas your group may have to help benefit the lives of the children with whom you are working.

Your group also has the opportunity to get involved in general project activities in San Pedro that help benefit both the local people and environment. These include:

  • Walking the animals at the SAGA Humane Society and providing them with care and attention
  • Supporting a Girls’ Club that tackles self-esteem issues, bullying, and other topics related to adolescent girls
  • Supporting a Boy’s Group that tackles issues of respect, bullying, and other topics related to adolescent boys
  • Re-usable bag and straw campaign to reduce the amount of plastic used on the island
  • Mural painting in schools

We also arrange Community Days for groups. Groups help make a big difference in activities such as beach clean-ups as many hands make quick and easy work. These may involve:

  • Cleaning and revamping parks
  • Participating in beach and community clean-ups
  • Taking part in community movie nights

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
