Group trips to Senegal to work on one of care and community projects make a real tangible impact on the children they work with. Senegal is a beautiful country with expanses of desert in the north to luxuriant tropical rainforests in the south. The Senegalese are warm and welcoming and your efforts as a volunteer here will be truly appreciated.
As a group, you will spend your time helping renovate buildings in a school or childrens centre. You may be involved in cleaning the walls, filling cracks and gaps and painting them. You may be involved in helping build new toilet blocks and teaching facilities. Whatever it is, you as a group will make a big contribution to the lives of the children by improving their environment.
Groups teaching at a secondary school will be working alongside a local English teacher in a class of between 40 and 60 students, all aged between 11 and 19 years old. For other groups teaching in a primary school, seeing as English isn't usually taught to students aged between 5 and 12, you will be teaching a variety of subjects of your choice with the assistance of a local teacher. Groups will usually spend 4 hours a day teaching followed by spending the remainder of the day planning tomorrows lessons, though these duties can be split and shared amongst your group. For groups with good French-language skills, you will have the opportunity to teach basic French, maths and English at the Talibe Centre.
You will also spend time with the children either at a kindergarten or centre for street children. This will be in small groups and one-to-one. Your input will really stimulate the children and provide them with fun and activity throughout their days.
While you are in Senegal you will stay in an apartment or hostel. You will get chance to experience the local community and visit local sites as well take part in organized activities such as dance lessons. You will also go on trips further afield such as to the desert where you may go for a camel ride or to a beautiful beach for a rest. As a French speaking country, you will also have chance to refine your knowledge of the language. Your time in Senegal will be really worthwhile and you will have plenty to talk about when you go home.
