This Medicine placement in Peru is a great chance for a group to observe the medical profession in a developing country up close. By working in both private and public hospitals, Projects Abroad provides the opportunity for you to witness a wide variety of medical treatments in a range of different departments.
Your group’s time as volunteers will be split between attending medical workshops and observing different procedures. Volunteers will spend some of their time shadowing experienced local doctors and nurses, where they will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss interesting cases. During the placement you will all learn a lot about local Peruvian health issues and treatments and also have the opportunity to take part in a few Spanish lessons. Your group can learn some Spanish words related to the medical field which will be useful when you’re exposed to different cases within the hospital.
We currently work in various placements including hospitals, health care centres, children's rehabilitation hospitals and private healthcare clinics. These cover a wide range of departments including nursing, medicine, midwifery, pharmacy, laboratory and dentistry.
During your groups trip to Peru you will have the opportunity to spend time in the local communities. The medical outreach programme provides medical and health education to those who otherwise would not have access to help.
The group will be based in the Sacred Valley, an agricultural region that supplies the city with much of its produce. Here you can live in a hostel, in a shared apartment or with a local host family where you will be able to enhance your Peruvian experience.
You’ll visit the incredible site of Machu Picchu at the weekend that Peru is famous for. Your group will also have the chance to soak up the exciting atmosphere in one of the bustling and colourful markets found throughout the Sacred Valley.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
