Support the Bone Marrow Donor Programme

Projects Abroad wants to bring the work of the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) to our volunteers’ attention with some urgency.

Sadly, one of our former Ghana Human Rights volunteers is suffering from Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a blood cancer, and has not responded to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Things are now at a critical stage and it is imperative that a matching bone marrow donor is found.

The Bone Marrow Donor Programme programme matches the blood stem cells of donors to people who are in desperate need of life-saving transplants. Unlike with other blood or organ donations, finding two people who are compatible is exceedingly difficult. Statistically speaking, the chance of finding a match is 1:20,000. Many people suffering from blood cancer have to resort to trying to find a donor internationally.

The best way of improving the chances of finding matches is to increase the BMDP donor base.

We are therefore encouraging past, present and future volunteers and their friends and family to consider taking the quick and easy test to find out about their suitability of becoming a donor.
